One case where deletion is refused
What is deleted or permanently anonymised
- Your display name, preferred name, and first and last name.
- Your profile photo, bio, location, and social links.
- Your public handle, which is replaced with a random one so old profile links no longer identify you.
- Your email address, which is scrambled to a non-working address on both your profile and your sign-in record. The account can never be signed into or recovered, and your original address is freed up in case you are ever invited again.
- Your membership of every community, including any member or student ID an organisation assigned you. You disappear from every member list.
- Your notification devices, so push notifications stop reaching you immediately.
What is kept, and why
Upklass does not erase the things you contributed to other people's conversations and records. Those stay, with your identity removed, so that threads other members took part in remain readable and communities keep their history. Specifically:
- Posts, comments, course progress, and event responses. These remain and are shown as belonging to "Deleted user", with no name, photo, or working profile link.
- Direct messages you sent. These stay in the other person's conversation, shown from a deleted member. While you are still signed in you can hide individual messages, which replaces them with "message deleted" and permanently erases any images attached to them - but the text itself is retained. See below.
- Points, rewards, and reward history. These records remain attached to the anonymised account.
- Security and billing records such as sign-in logs and payment records, which we are required to keep, and which are removed once that requirement ends.
How long the anonymised content stays
There is no automatic purge. It also matters that, throughout Upklass, deleting content hides it rather than erasing it. A deleted post, comment, or message disappears from view for everyone, but the underlying record is retained so that administrators can review abuse reports and undo mistakes.
- Posts and comments can be hidden by an administrator of that community, including after your account is gone. They can also be restored by one.
- Direct messages can only be hidden by the person who sent them, and only while that person is signed in. Administrators have no access to private conversations, so once your account is deleted there is no way to hide your messages from within Upklass.
- Images attached to a direct message are treated differently. When the sender deletes such a message we also delete the image files themselves, so this is the one part of a deletion that removes data rather than hiding it. A link to an image that was created shortly beforehand can keep working until it expires, up to 24 hours. If you need confirmation that a particular file is gone, ask us.
If you want content permanently erased rather than hidden, email support@upklass.com and tell us what to remove. Do this before you delete your account: afterwards your email address no longer matches anything on our side, so we cannot confirm the request came from you.
Who is told
We email you a confirmation. The owners and administrators of each community you belonged to are notified that a member deleted their account; they see the name you used and a partly hidden version of your email address, so they can keep their member records straight. Other members are not notified.
Can I get my account back?
No. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone, and the same email cannot be used to recover it. If you want to use Upklass again later, you will need a fresh invitation from a community and a new account.
Need help?
If you cannot sign in to delete your account yourself, email support@upklass.com from the address on your account and we will process the deletion for you.
